WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES OF COUNSELING SERVICES?
Counseling services are designed to:
- Help students develop self-understanding;
- Help students build self-confidence;
- Help students recognize and make the best use of their abilities;
- Give students an opportunity to talk about their educational, vocational, personal and social concerns;
- Help students recognize, understand and work to resolve learning difficulties;
- Help students better adjust to their school and home environment;
- Help students adjust to significant changes or disruptions in their lives such as parental separations, divorce, a death in the family, moving, etc.;
- Assist parents and teachers in helping students succeed in their educational efforts.
HOW DOES THE COUNSELOR PROVIDE SERVICES?
Counselors work with students individually and/or in small groups to assist them in solving personal and school problems as well as in identifying individual needs. Counselors work with teachers and other school staff to facilitate learning and consult with parents concerning student problems. Counselors may participate in Student Assistance Teams. The counselor is often the individual responsible for coordinating services for students among school specialists and for making referrals to agencies outside the school for specialized services. In performing these functions, counselors are required to maintain students’ confidences.
HOW DOES A STUDENT OBTAIN COUNSELING SERVICES?
Students may be referred for Act 89 counseling services by:
- the principal;
- the teacher or other school staff;
- the parent(s);
- the student may self-refer.
Non-Public Counseling Services work with the schools and family to assist students in dealing with a number of challenges. Non-Public counselors respect both family and school goals in counseling students. Every effort is made to insure that these services are of the highest quality.
