I am writing to nominate Matthew Hammel for the Bill Bainbridge Award. Matthew joined our team in September 2020 and quickly became an integral part of our Pre-K Counts team and the Early Learning Academy. From day one, he has shown a can-do attitude. He goes above and beyond the expectations of his job to support all MCIU programs at ELA and provides exceptional customer service to everyone who enters our building. Matthew is responsible for managing calendars and expenses, budget review (his favorite aspect of his job, numbers), answering and directing calls, ordering supplies, submitting attendance, updating Pelican for Pre-K Counts, meeting arrangements, and assisting with professional development, among other Pre-K Counts administrative duties. He is a fantastic support to our Pre-K Counts program, which has grown 239% since the opening school year of 2017-2018. He is always willing to lend a helping hand and has even acted as a substitute teacher assistant when needed.

He helps Early Intervention by scheduling rooms at ELA. If someone books the conference rooms at ELA, he makes sure that it is ready by checking the furniture setup and the technology in the rooms. He will check for, locate, and deliver packages for all Head Start, EI, PHP, and School Age programs. He has even located “missing packages.” These are outside his job description, but he wants to ensure that everything he does is held to high expectations and that the customer service provided to anyone who enters ELA is exceptional. If anyone needs anything at ELA, the person they usually go to is Matthew. If they can’t find him in his office or walking around the building, they will sometimes see me and ask me where he is. If it’s a rare occurrence and he is off, I’ll tell them I can try to help, but they usually say they will wait for him to return. Everyone at ELA knows Matthew can help with any request; if he can’t, he knows who he can ask. Not all staff at ELA works for Pre-K Counts, yet he still supports them.

But Matthew’s contributions go far beyond his administrative duties. He is typically the first face visitors see when they come to the Early Learning Academy, and he greets them all with a smile. He provides them with the necessary information and directs them where to go. He goes out of his way to ensure everyone feels right at home, and anyone who meets Matthew has nothing but positive things to say about him.

Matthew has also taken it upon himself to be in charge of the Montco Emergency Radio for the building. He understands that not all administrators can be in the building daily to have this responsibility, and we all know we can count on Matthew with this added responsibility. Matthew helps with fire drills, lockdown drills, and weather drills at ELA. He is always there when security has questions about which program they are assisting.

Matthew always wants to help out the whole MCIU in any way. He recognizes what needs to be done before even being asked. Matthew’s dedication, positive attitude, and exceptional customer service make him an exemplary professional in all his duties. He goes above and beyond to support our programs and ensure that everyone entering our building feels welcome and supported. I hope you will see fit to give Matthew this award. He truly deserves recognition and exemplifies the term “Above and Beyond.”
