Montgomery County Intermediate Unit (MCIU) is proud to announce its selection as a recipient of the 2023 Bureau of Justice STOP School Violence Prevention grant. This $1,000,000 grant will expand emergency planning and preparedness for students with disabilities and build upon the existing threat assessment training to provide focused training for building-level support staff. MCIU will collaborate with local law enforcement, school staff, and parents to complete the work of the grant from October 1, 2023 to September 30, 2026.
Empowering Emergency Planning for Students with Disabilities
In order to expand emergency planning for students with disabilities, MCIU will develop a comprehensive template and training protocol for school personnel and local law enforcement to address the unique needs of these students. Local schools will receive support in updating their emergency plans to include personalized strategies for students with disabilities, involving parents through dedicated training and input sessions.
Enhancing Threat Assessment Training for Building-Level Support Staff
The grant will also improve threat assessment training for building-level support staff, including custodians, aides, and secretarial staff. New hires will receive training on a newly developed, specialized curriculum through innovative video-based options.
Community-Wide Engagement for School Safety
MCIU will launch a county-wide public relations campaign to emphasize the critical role of all community members in maintaining school safety. This grant reaffirms MCIU’s dedication to creating safe and secure learning environments for Montgomery County students and staff. The projects developed under this grant will serve as a model for enhancing school safety across regions.
We are truly honored to have been selected as a recipient of the 2023 Bureau of Justice STOP School Violence Prevention grant. This grant will empower our commitment to enhancing emergency planning for students with disabilities and strengthening threat assessment training for our staff. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with our local law enforcement, dedicated school staff, and parents to ensure the safety of our schools and set a precedent for community-wide engagement and school safety initiatives in Montgomery County.
