Montgomery County Students Raise Their Voices at the State Capitol

On Tuesday, June 3, high school student leaders from across Montgomery County traveled to Harrisburg for the first-ever Voices for Education Day on the Hill!

Developed in partnership with Children First, Voices for Education is a legislative advocacy program that empowers students in grades 9–12 to lead conversations, share their perspectives, and drive meaningful change on educational issues, both in their schools and across the Commonwealth.

After a full year of preparation and collaboration during quarterly meetings at MCIU, students arrived at the Pennsylvania State Capitol ready to make their voices heard. They described how meeting lawmakers face to face gave them a front-row view of the legislative process, hands-on advocacy experience, and the confidence to drive real change.

“My favorite part of today was seeing all the school districts come together for a great cause,” said Bella. “Seeing all the ideas we brought to the table was really inspiring.”

“Today reminded me that now more than ever, using your voice is really important,” added Melissa. “It might not always seem like it, but it really makes a difference.”

Students were also given a guided tour of the historic Pennsylvania State Capitol, exploring the Main Rotunda, the ornate House and Senate Chambers, and the Supreme Court Chamber. “My favorite part of today was probably seeing how beautiful the Capitol was—it’s actually breathtaking,” said one student. “I’m here to advocate for mental health issues, but I’m mesmerized by how this place looks.”

As we look ahead to the next school year, we’re excited to continue growing Voices for Education and supporting the next generation of changemakers. Congratulations to this year’s inaugural group of student advocates for stepping up, speaking out, and helping shape the future of education in Pennsylvania!
